Re: Random discussions
Actually... The best form of football is lingire football well, best spectator sport anyway :p
AFL I don't know too much about... Despite being the "Australian football", a large number of people don't follow it at all. What's different about rugby is they do have the big hard hitters all the time. No, they don't get a solid chance to line each other up and take them out, but they do this with no protection, and just slam into each other. It is still really stop-start compared to soccer, but has much more movement in it.
Another way to look at it is a bunch of sweaty men in short shorts groping each other trying to get a ball...
And technically American is the only country that calls it soccer (officially Australia moved to calling it football after we went well in the world cup), butte all still call it soccer
I don't think America and Australia share many big sports really... Our biggest are football, soccer, swimming (until that phelps guy we dominated the pool) and of course, cricket. From what I know, America is generally NFL, baseball, and basketball... Right?

Re: Random discussions
Baseball, American Football, and Basketball are indeed the big US sports. Soccer/Association Football here is mainly a female game, but it is growing somewhat in popularity. I often joke that here in the US, ethnic background only matters because it gives you someone to root for in the World Cup once the USA is knocked out in the group stage. Hockey is also fairly big here, but not nearly as big as it is in Canada. NASCAR auto racing is somehow the biggest spectator sport in the country, but that's mainly because those huge racetracks have only a few big races a year each, so they have to seat hundreds of thousands of people to make money. Other sports have dozens of games a week in a dozen cities, rather than one big race at a time, so they only seat a couple tens of thousands of people per stadium, and most people watch on TV. Swimming is a big sport at the high school level, but not really above that, and there's not really a pro circuit. Tennis, Golf, Horse racing, and a few other niche sports exist, but don't have huge followings. Rugby is popular in college, but that's about it. Cricket is almost unknown, but immigrants from India and the Caribbean occasionally can be seen playing it in public parks. Lacrosse is popular in the northeast of the country, unknown elsewhere. Ultimate Frisbee and Flag Football are popular recreationally, but that's about it. Roller Derby is making a bizarre comeback thanks to a couple of cult-classic movies. Here in Chicago, we have our own supplemental offshoot of baseball known as softball...technically, 16-inch softball, which is played with a round ball the size of a canteloupe which is covered in soft leather, but still almost as hard as a regular baseball. Play is almost identical to baseball, but there are no gloves used, and pitch is underhand slow-pitch. There is little strategy or even fielding skill involved, the game centers heavily on power hitting, and the general saying is "the bigger the beer belly, the longer the home run".
Re: Random discussions
Yeah, we know softball here.
Our motorsports is fairly big, mainly the V8 supercars, a massive rivalry between the two companies, Holden and ford.

Re: Random discussions
No, the motorsport. There's no scene for it in the states (they just go to europe) but Australia has quite a few very good riders (it's a bike sport)

Re: Random discussions
These minecraft animations with parody music get really popular in the community. I'm surprised I had not seen that one before.

Re: Random discussions
Because its a parody,.. They chose the song, made the alternate lyrics, then made the animations... It's the lyics that make it cool

Re: Random discussions
In what universe does parodies always have to be terrible songs?? I didn't even hear the lyrics because I was focused on the cool animations and the terrible tunes that sought to poison them.
Ok, I gave it a third try and it wasn't that bad. It seemed to end a bit abruptly though.

can tell we have very different music tastes... The song isn't great, but I don't hate it anywhere near as much as you seem to :p

Same, its one of those songs that I would never listen to on my own accord, but it's at least bearable.Brendanan wrote:can tell we have very different music tastes... The song isn't great, but I don't hate it anywhere near as much as you seem to :p

I would have to agree with Arro, but add barely to bearable. I could never enjoy it.

Re: Random discussions
I think I'll add that to my 'Thrash/Unbearable' list.
I personally prefer ye olde rock, metallish stuff and some finnish music genres I'm not sure of. Probably rockish, though.
