For newcomers: that first picture is the entrance to the city from our first failed attempt at this project. We will have something similar this time around.
And Steel, we're gonna need you to apply if you still want to be part of this. Your designing talents would be a good add.

The second picture is enki's and my attempt to make one.
Third and last are on another server.

I think we should upsize a little more this time, but not entirely sure. The 3rd pic is a little like what our main hall was like... Large circular room with a high domed roof
Re: Concept stuff thread
These are the apartment balconies of the brilliant fortress Flarechannel QuantumSawdust made in Dwarf Fortress.

I'll go looking through the fortresses people have made for inspiration, I'll post some of the pictures.

Since Minecraft has such a small vertical margin for building, it would be cool to dig a large mass transportation tunnel with Minecart tracks to various districts. I've never seen that kind of thing done before.

I'm just imagining a messy scene where minecart tracks go everywhere all over the place.Arrowave wrote:Since Minecraft has such a small vertical margin for building, it would be cool to dig a large mass transportation tunnel with Minecart tracks to various districts. Getting the tracks set up right could prove to be quite challenging, but the payoff would be very worth it.Blackwind wrote:I'm just imagining a messy scene where minecart tracks go everywhere all over the place.Arrowave wrote:Since Minecraft has such a small vertical margin for building, it would be cool to dig a large mass transportation tunnel with Minecart tracks to various districts. Re: Concept stuff thread
I threw this together as an idea for a "mass" transportation highway. It could be more grand, but even this would be a lot of digging to extend for hundreds of blocks.
I think that two lanes could go a long way (one for each direction). The biggest issue with this design is the lack of room for transporting resources efficiently. As for the walls, I'm sure that others could come up with something a bit more original.

Don't worry about making the walls more original, they look amazing.Arrowave wrote:I threw this together as an idea for a "mass" transportation highway. It could be more grand, but even this would be a lot of digging to extend for hundreds of blocks.

Re: Concept stuff thread
Perhaps you should use some other materials than just those slabs
Like, as I usually do, I make pillars of which the bottom two are cobble, then three stone, then one cobble, then three smooth again.
So that'd look like this:

Re: Concept stuff thread
Great stuff Dr. Steel and Arrowave, very inspiring! Keep coming up with amazing ideas guys.
Spent a couple hours tonight throwing together some concept work. Some pictures below, but view the full Picasa album here.
Wall Details:
Dwarven Chandelier!
Some Pillars:
Lastly a video walk through of what I built tonight. Some of it is mediocre but I was just trying a lot of different stuff. A few things I really liked. I still want to experiment more with lighting larger areas with a single lava block. We are going to need all our torches for the branch mine at some point, so the less we use in the city, the more effective our resource use will be.

Re: Concept stuff thread
Here's some stuff I made for the previous dwarven city thingy.
Pillars. Made them a bit small but should be extended upwards.
Furnaces.
Chain.
Same chain design, with a fat chandelier lamp thing hanging below it(Can be seen in the back).

Re: Concept stuff thread
I think we should take another look at these Ideas and possibly expand upon them. Implimentation of these into the forge is very important and would make it look much better

Someone's been rummaging through the trash :p I'd completely forgotten about this thread.
You're right though, adding some of these ideas to the forge would be great. What kind of things did you have in mind?

I think that design for the chain posted above could have a place in the forge. Maybe it could hold the bridge over the lava pool up. Instead of supports going down into the lava, it could be suspended by chains.

I wonder if some of the newer materials for stairs might make those chains look even better. Netherbrick or netherquartz, maybe?

That'd be pretty cool. It'd also probably make me dizzy to walk on, as I'd constantly be waiting for the bridge to start swaying :p
