These are some old screenshots of a glassed-in tree farm I built on a convenient mountainside on the old "Glacier" seed. It was part of a project to carve a comprehensive system of production facilities out of the guts of this one particular mountain, a project I sadly never finished, instead deciding to build a long series of mineshafts down to bedrock level, a truly enormous bedrock-level branch mine connecting them all together, and an elevated minecart track connecting them above surface level as well. It was a single player game, and once my focus of effort moved out far enough away from this mountain that these chunks were no longer loaded most of the time, I pretty much abandoned this facility. But when it worked, it was my main source of wood for a while.

So just a simple tree farm? Did the glass ever get shattered by leaves, or did you give enough space for it not to happen?

Leaves sometimes grew on the outside of the glass, but never actually broke any of the glass blocks. I don't know if this has changed since then, this world was some time ago, back before the Adventure Update came out

Back in Indev a tree sometimes grew into the spawn hut so sometimes there was a big hole in the roof, it was fixed before we even had a wooden hut.
