So I've noticed that, me and Sret especially, seem to have a habit of completely derailing threads :p the inactivity thread turned into a discussion about star wars (I have a feeling it's mostly my fault)... But anyway, here's a thread designed to be derailed, with no need to get back on the track Very Happy

So pretty much just have a discussion about anything, and who cares if the topic goes from minecraft to cleaning your room then to skydiving

Ah, yes. It's nice that we're setting a good example Embarassed

And don't be too hard on yourself about Star Wars, the mere mentioning of it will switch my focus in a second and then it's all downhill from there Rolling Eyes

By the way, I just realized that whoever designed the forums we're using can't spell "embarrassed" No

If you put the mouse pointer on top of any of the smileys to the right it will show a describing word and they're not all spelt correctly. Seems a bit unprofessional from the people behind these forums =p

Oh... Well, that's a fail... Or is it just the stupid american spellings??? They have a habit of not spelling stuff right (color instead of colour, armor instead of armour)

They have lots of different spellings beyond the o/ou ordeal aswell, such as centre/center, but they do not spell it embarass, that's just a fairly common error

True true... Also metre they go meter (which actually has a completely different meaning)... Then again, this is the Internet, who needs to spell :p

When it comes to re/er I actually prefer the american way as the swedish words are the same (meter, liter, center) but there's plenty of other differences and WAIT DID YOU JUST SAY WHO NEEDS TO SPELL?! Spelling is crucial!! Without spelling we will fall into chaos and anarchy!! WITHOUT PROPER SPELLING WE'RE DOOMED!!!

Well, not quite, but I'm a spelling champion and I really hate when people can't spell lol

I hate word mixups (too to two, there they're their) but I dont mind spelling mistakes. I generally only make them when I'm not thinking about what I type, as I am a fairly good speller (considering I'm studying engineering, and commonly the longest word we need to know is our profession). If it's the kind of thing like "oh mah gawhd, i chant beleve lhike u no tat ho ova ther" then I start to shoot people, and if they can't use punctuation (even my dodgy stuff with all the ... everywhere), then I start to go crazy. I had trouble writing that stupid sentence without punctuation

I hate the mixups too but I hate spelling errors more as anyone can make mistakes (I tend to type very sloppy when I chat) but misspelt words show you're too stupid to get it right

I have some case of pneumonia dyslexia and also 'lack of caffeine? don't function properly at all'

Aka:
-When I'm sleepy, I can't type.
-When I'm not on coffee, I can't do anything properly. This ranges from playing games to being unable to detect sarcasm.

I'm very forgiving of typos in temporary mediums like chat and email, end even forum posting. But in things like novels and museum displays where you'd think an editing pass would be done, it does tend to tick me off when mistakes slip through. It's a bit of a family tradition to have fun spotting errors and typos in museum displays, on our latest trip we caught goofs in the NASA space and rocket center in Huntsville, at the USS Alabama battleship park in Mobile, in the West Virginia State Museum, and in the International Civil Rights Center and Museum in Greensboro.

In more temporary mediums, though, when I see someone make the same error on a consitent basis, it goes in my mind from "typo" to "do they really not know how to spell that properly"? I have a friend who can't seem to get through his head that it isn't "Emporer", for example.

It saddens me to hear that places like that let typos slip by. It takes one single person to read the text and notice that there's a typo but they're still there, which baffles me.

That's what bothers me, when it's obvious that they actually don't know how to spell the words, and typos like your example seem to be fairly common due to the fact that some people (probably mostly dyslexics) tend to type the word the same way they think it's pronounced. The interesting part is that it seems to be most common amongst native english speakers.

English has borrowed more words (and their baffling, ever-changing verb and plural forms) from more different languages than any other language. English doesn't just borrow from other languages, it knocks them over the head in dark alleys and goes through their pockets for loose grammar. A french-speaker can look at any word in French and instantly know how it is pronounced, even though (to an English-speaker) it looks like a jumble of random letters bearing as little relationship to the pronunciation as, well, half the English vocabulary likely looks to a French-speaker. Spelling bees in non-English languages are hardly the occasion for high drama that they are here, where they get broadcast on ESPN like a sporting event.

A lot of errors are also likely due to the fact that many of us will see a word written out many times before we ever hear it said aloud, and get a wrong pronunciation stuck in our head. I had this problem for years with "epitome", and honestly thought it was pronounced "Ep-pee-toam" rather than "Ep-pit-to-mee". I still am likely to wrongly enunciate the "S" at the end of my home state of "Illinois", another victim of the different rules of English and French orthography. The reverse is likely for those who hear certain words said aloud many times before seeing them written down, and this is likely the case for my friend and "Emporer" and "Kolidoscope".

That's spot on. When I was in elementary school I was ridiculously bad at pronunciating english words. I pronounced weapons "way-pens"!! As for epitome; I still pronounce it ep-pee-toam even though every time I hear it I realize I know it's pronounced ep-pit-to-mee, and I do the same with other words with more obvious pronunciations.

Also, english doesn't only borrow stuff, it forces itself onto other languages aswell. Nowadays you wont find a person below 30 in sweden who can't speak reasonably good english, simply because it is everywhere.

I am likely to make the same typo over and over. I just let my fingers type, and I just type a word wrong. You'll see this in game a lot when I mix around the letters of some words all the time, but it does happen as wrong spelling too... It's just not thinking, even though I know it's wrong.

On the forums, I generally use my phone, which has the awesome feature of autocorrect Very Happy it's actually fairly good for me, and doesn't give me a billion horrible situations... They're all my own fault. As an example, it was just a random conversation on Facebook about a friends birthday. We were offering all kinds of strange creatures as a gift, but none fit the criteria, so I said "ok, so what kind of exotic animal would you like for your birthday?". Unfortunately, the backspace button, and 'm' are directly next to each other, and I commonly touch backspace rather than m... As you could imagine, instead of coming out as 'animal' it became 'anal'. Even worse, BOTH her parents saw it.

As for the languages, English is pretty screwed up... It's a wonder how it became the number one worldwide language. Honestly though, I'd rather Latin madea revival Very Happy

I do exactly the same, throw certain letters around all the time. For example, words with "sk" are doomed, I make it "ks" every single time. I also tend to somehow hit space before I'm done typing the word so the last letter usually ends up in the next word. I do these things all the time in chats but I write way more carefully on forums and stop to change the sloppy-speed-writing errors before pressing enter, which I don't do in chats.

Latin is badass, I would love for it to be more prominent.

I write things like minceraft a lot, or sometimes just randomly change an o to an e or something weird for no reason. The putting spaces in the wrong spot is done a lot too... Either before or after, it doesn't matter. Also, ' often becomes ; or sometimes even " because I for some reason hit shift... and of course , instead of m makes words look weird too
