Ok, so, i figured i'd give you guys a more complete understanding of how our city is laid out, and distances involved. This will also give us an idea of the size we are looking at for the farm caves. I took a few pictures with an Xray texture pack so we could see... here is the major parts of the city labelled

this is the atrium... just cause I can :p

And here is the distances (approx) between locations. Now, I measured from the edge of the dome (Idk why), so just add 25 to the numbers for the distance from the middle... The one to the portal room is right to the end, the one to the throne room is to the entrance, and the one to the atrium is very approximately to the middle.

Now, think about this... It's a pretty damn massive city... BUT, what was the planned size for the farm caves? 200*300??? What will that look like?

Here's an example:

Now, that's an idea of the size we need... We'll need to find an area that big that is at least y=70 giving us about 50 blocks from water to roof) the entire way... higher preferred, and it has to not interfere with anything we currently have, and be on the opposite side to the atrium... Since the mines are on the right, that sends us to the left, in the quadrant between the portal room and entrance (doesn't necessarily need to be close to either location)... Either way, we're gonna have a LOT of "fun"

That's pretty impressive, I think we're going to be very lucky if we manage to find somewhere, I think the more likely option is that we're going to be digging a giant hole then putting a roof over it.

So it will be nearly the size of our entire city, or at least the core of it? That's a bit crazy but still very cool. If nothing else it makes the actual city feel rather small! I think we might need to stock up on good picks and stuff for when we get it started. I can feel my inside miner stir already Wink

We will figure something out regarding the location, as we always do. Why does it have to be at a certain location though? (as in the quadrant between the entrance and portal room) The only downside with having it elsewhere is the added distance, and it probably wont have to be that far away anyway. It's supposed to be a big city, big distances are fine, we'll just make railways. Also having it in the outskirts was part of the idea, no? If taking a cart to the farm caves takes the same time as taking one from the dome to the store room I'd feel like we've messed up.

It will be an amazing project aswell that might increase the activity of the server a lot. Usually it's like this: "We just dug out the atrium in 10 minutes, let's spend two months figuring out the details."
On this one we could probably have several people working for hours just to complete a few % of the cave. We will actually have to put some work in to get it done and it will feel like such an accomplishment when we're done.

You hit the nail on the head with the Atrium bit, sret. Many of the people who participate on the server are mainly interested in the prospect of digging massive chambers, which we have done a fair share of so far. This however, will be an endeavor far beyond the throne room and the Atrium and I think it will bring back some of the drive to this project.

There was another vanilla Minecraft project where a group of like 20-30 people recreated Moria from LOTRs in Minecraft. I think by the end of the project they had dug a massive cave almost thousands of blocks long. It was so big they had several little villages on the floor of the cave. I think they said that it took them about 4 months of digging to achieve so I know we can complete the Farm Caves.

As for location I think that if we have to we can just dig a hole and create the ceiling overhead. Obviously this would create a large hill on the surface but maybe afterwards we can devote some time to terraforming the land and covering it with grass and trees. Also I have completed the 200*300 mock-up of the Farm Caves in MCEdit and I will try to post that here soon.

Sounds awesome!

You know, crazy ideas are 1. Not always bad 2. Never crazy enough.

Ok, so I think with the size of the caves, we will need to just find a random location, not under ocean, and that doesn't interfere with the mines or any other part of the city. The original idea i had was to have a tunnel like the one to housing leading to the farm cavse, but that isn't going to happen, as we just don't have the room. I think that once we get a view of what this 200*300 looks size wise, then we get a general consensus on the top view, we can find a suitable location, and just run a minecart to it
