Lol... Anyway...

Discussion here has kinda died... I'm gonna go scouting for a decent location... We want 50 high? Or 70 high... Plus a few for the depth of the water

Brendanan and I have located a nice spot for this place.

It is in a desert, and although we need to fill up some lakes and rivers it is about 200x300 and therefore from X 133 and Z 864 to X -100 and Z 564.

Thanks Smile

Now we just need to figure out an outline of how we will start digging it, and where we will locate the large pillar in the middle

I think we've just marked it out on the surface... We need to at least draw up some basic plans before we start digging I'd say

It's not under an ocean, and it's big enough Wink

Big enough? As compared to what? We've got the entire world outside our city to our disposal, what would stop us from using any area that isn't beneath an ocean?

Well, it's the closest we found, that covers the entire 200*300 area without going underwater for too much (small rivers and shallow lakes is all) without interfering with the city

Nothing wrong with a bit of terraforming.
And besides, we have enough stone anyway.
Did you know we have enough cobble to make a solid cube of it, with edges of 57 blocks long?

No, I said 400, and I miscalculated.

400 for sides would require 64 million blocks.

Hmm...the only problem with doing it in a desert is, if we try to do it underground, every time we come near the surface, the sand will collapse down into the cave. But as we probably will need more than the usual 64 height to work with to make it properly epic underground caves, we might as well start by digging the whole thing out, quarry-style, then roof it over later, perhaps putting the sand we dug out as a thin layer on the top to camouflage it. Although then we'd need to light up the area to keep Endermen from stealing the sand and uncovering the dome beneath...Maybe we should just use the sand to make a glass dome after all?

Re: The Farm Caves

I was saying that, while we'd all prefer a nice stone dome over the caves, any reasonable-thickness camouflage coating of dirt or sand we place on top of the stone dome is gonna get picked up by endermen who then bugger off at dawn with the blocks of dirt or sand still in their hands. The area above my base complex in my other server is starting to look like it's been sandblasted due to the endermen slowly eroding away the dirt. So if we want the area above the farm caves to look like a natural plateau or hilly upland, rather than a bare rock dome, we need to light it up with torches over a wide area to prevent Endermen spawns. But as even that lighting up the area betrays our underground presence, we might as well just put a big old glass dome that monsters can't spawn on and Endermen can't pick up. Or can anyone else think of a good way to prevent the endermen erosion problem? A big above-sea-level artificial lake, perhaps?

I think we'll be alright... we do need to do a big above ground terraforming session, and make everything look natural again anyway. If we made it at least 3 or 4 thick, it would be no different than if it were a natural desert... perhaps even put a layer of sandstone at the bottom too. As snate said, we're dwarves, sunlight is not needed ;D

That also gave me an epic idea for the top of the housing too Very Happy

Don't totally cut off sunlight in the housing atrium, as half the point of the open roof was to allow sunlight down to the bottom to banish the void fog and let us actually see across the bottom of the pit.

Yes, lava is entirely opaque and blocks all light. This is normally not a factor since it also emits light at the highest level.

dammit! It emits light at the highest level, but it doesn't possess the same properties as sunlight, and is affected by air blocks in the strength of light, unlike sunlight, which will give full light to any block exposed to the sun. That sucks that it's not transparent. There goes my plans
