Re: The Farm Caves
Today I might try and test some numbers for this cave in MC-Edit. Then we can see about how big we need it. Also this picture from Assassin's Creed gives me ideas for the central pillar in this cavern and the skylights.
Obviously without a city below.

It'll be interesting to see what you come up with on MCEdit...
so what is the opinion of my drawing? Draw a top view of what you'd see working better, maybe just a few small changes even... just because I draw something or say something doesn't mean it's final

I'm liking the look of it so far, I'm hoping a massive amount of digging will get people back on the server, like it did for the atrium.

Re: The Farm Caves
We just need to know what we are digging first... The top down view is the most helpful... Do we stick with my 30 second drawing, or does someone want to have a crack at changing it a bit?

Shouldn't we finish the apartments before looking too far into this?

Re: The Farm Caves
We could use huge amounts of TnT to start the cave

Re: The Farm Caves
Nah, you need to detonate all at the same time otherwise uncontrolled destruction occurs.. Oh, and you need 1. massive amounts 2. lot of time as 1 tnt destroys only 8 stone.

Indeed we should. I think everyone agrees that the Atrium is still incomplete, but nobody knows what to do about it.sret wrote:Shouldn't we finish the apartments before looking too far into this?

Re: The Farm Caves
I started a little on the atrium 3rd floor, with a balcony (assuming we're doing 4 apartments there), but I ran out of time... I just got this thread started so we were ready to go as soon as atrium was finished

Remmeber this thread people! I know a lot of you are fairly inactive, but when you have a chance, all contributions are welcome The main thing I'm looking for is a final decision on a top view layout, or a floor plan of the cave, what goes where, and then we go size... 100*200*50 W*L*H has been mentioned, so if anyone has the skills to MCEdit an area that big and see what it looks like size wise, wwe can then choose numbers based on that

Re: The Farm Caves
I finally got around to doing an MCedit mockup of the Farm Caves. It turned out to be very dome-like and perfectly rounded instead of natural but it should give us a good idea of the dimensions. Here is an album: Album
This cavern is a little less than 200x200x50. I tried 100x200x50 but it was too cramped. I feel like this size is the best because it's still doable but it's also still massive.
As for the island, it is a very small island with a flat surface and brief sand beaches. Obviously we need the island to be mainly flat if it is going to work for farming. I think to save space we could put storage and maybe small farms inside the spire itself.
Also, ignore the ugly skylights, they will look better when we do them. Also do not mind the glowstone, that is there to let everyone see the scale.

Re: The Farm Caves
Thanks for doing that certainly nowhere near natural looking enough, with any of it though...

Re: The Farm Caves
Yeah, my goal was to just give an idea of the dimensions. My lack of skills in MCedit caused me to create the dome in the most inefficient way possible so I had to leave it rounded and perfect. Once we start digging it shouldn't be a problem making it look natural.

Re: The Farm Caves
can you try something that's more like 200*300? see what that looks like? Saves having the island dead centre

Re: The Farm Caves
I kinda feel it should be a bit higher, although I don't know how practical that is, maybe 60/70 blocks instead of 50?

Wasn't that what I suggested?
Also, note that the height isn't equal everywhere. It may have some parts that have a low ceiling, other parts have a high ceiling, etc.

Re: The Farm Caves
yer I thought 50 blocks would be high enough until I saw it, but looking at it from some of the different angles, it might be alright. I'm realy undecided about all the dimensions tbh, that's why I've stayed out of it.
Edit: Also, looking at the size of the cave at the moment, and considering we might make it bigger, we should run a rail line out there that can shuttle stone back in chest carts, i'm sure it will save so much time it's untrue

Or we could just make use of the ender chests.

Note that you can have only one ender chest inventory total, so that's 3*9= 27 spots for items. We probably also want food there and also making a railway lines is a lot more fun

Re: The Farm Caves
Well, what I'm thinking is we send one guy to the store room while somebody else at the digging site keeps filling the chest and the store guy empties it.

Re: The Farm Caves
I'll have to give the farm caves another try in MCEdit. This time I'll use the dimensions 200*300*70 but I'm not going to bother with making it look natural. I'll also try to light it up more sufficiently this time.

Re: The Farm Caves
Like the theory of the mining :p it'd be a temp rail line (I don't think a permanent line will work), so it's essentially a waste of materials

Can you try one lit, and one with just island lit?

Re: The Farm Caves
I think the light should be supplied by a huge lava filled sun. And the room should be a huge dome with the islands floating in the center.
