Finished a third and fourth sheep pen, both on the upper level. We now have Yellow and Blue sheep, colors chosen to provide wool for the color-coding of the warehouse hallways. Also on the upper level of the farms, there are two doors at the far end, one just before the tree farm and the other on the tree far balcony. These doors lead to cave systems that are not yet fully explored. The door short of the tree farm is labeled "Shepherd's Ravine" (it was supposed to be a reference both to being near the sheep pens, and to a classic Lenny Bruce routine, but apparently I misheard "Chavez Ravine" as "Shepherd's Ravine", oh well) and leads (eventually) to a large ravine system intersected by an abandoned mineshaft. It's lit up until the ravine, past which I haven't had a chance to mine or light stuff up yet. The other one has steps up to a under-sea cave that IS fully lit up and mined out, and steps down to a sinkhole that leads in turn up to the surface (that direction mined and lit) and down into the earth (which eventually hits areas not yet lit or mined).

@SW; Thanks for the cave information, I will check it out and clear the mineshaft. And rotten flesh is great food. Wink

@Bren; When I can't play I might aswell leave myself online sitting afk to make stuff grow, and to be able to help people whenever needed if I have a minute or two. And regarding ghasts, I personally call them "death from above". =P

Lava moat!

The switch is hidden behind the lava fall easy to see from the inside, hard to see outside.

But you can flip it from both sides.

Was digging out more sheep pens but kept breaking into caves. Went on a caving expedition that took all afternoon, but got almost two stacks of iron, 12 gold, 11 lapis, a stack of redstone, and four stacks of coal (not counting the two entire stacks of coal I had to turn into torches to light up this monster of a cave system). I also found a Skeleton Dungeon, but it had no chests in it, alas. I took the Mossy Cobble and used it to replace the cobble in the waterspouts of the auto-harvesting system for the wheat/reeds farm. Now it looks like the stone has moss growing on it from the dampness of frequent use.

Let's see, the most important things I've done today..

AFK'd in the egg farm gathering some 15-20 stacks of eggs, we can now make a ton of arrows.

Dug out most of 4 or so sheep pens for SW, great progress there.

Went to find Jeff in a cave to escort him home after a spelunking trip with tons of loot. Like most times, we were completely lost until we dug up under the minecart track to the mines. Think that's the third time me and Jeff found our way home by finding the tracks. Razz

what I did:
Helped make skeleton grinder
Much more work on portal room. It is now has walls up, and the roof in progress... We need to make a ring of glowstone around the walls. The floor needs decoration too... I'll finish the roof

Re: So what did YOU do today?

Bren and I built a Skeleton grinder. It's accessible from the second level of the Tree Farm, which is at the end of the farming hallway. Follow the sign to the Sinkhole, not the Moon Pool (which is a secret exit to the surface via swimming up through a hole in the seabed). Once in the cave, you'll see a trail of cobble along the floor, follow that to the grinder. Sit in the grinder room for a while until a bunch of skeletons are trapped far above, then release them into the drop tube with the lever. Once a bunch have fallen, close the drop tube, then go up the little staircase to the base of the drop tube, and toss a Splash Potion of Healing at the feet of the skeletons. It will kill them (like in D&D, healing magic hurts the undead), all or nearly all of them, and you can finish off any survivors with a sword or, frankly, with your fists, they should be almost dead. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I also invented a new type of tree farm. It's behind the main tree farm, and consists of two 2-high spaces separated by six spaces of solid rock. Through this rock there is a honeycomb/checkerboard pattern of vertical holes drilled, creating tubes. Saplings are planted under these tubes (only normal/oak saplings work for this system, due to a quirk in the tree-growth system), and then grow up into them. But most leaves either can't be generated because there is solid rock in their way, or promptly decay due to having solid rock cutting them off from the support of any log blocks. To harvest, walk through the lower access space chopping the base of the trees, then look up the tubes to chop the trunks out of the tubes. No muss, no fuss. I call it the Vertical Lumber System, or VLS, as a joking reference to how the vertical tubes resemble an Aegis-style VLS Vertical Launch System, as used for missiles on modern naval warships.

I also worked on better encasing the Blaze Spawner in the Netherfortress. I have a cobble box around it nearly completed, but somewhere within it, there is a block without a torch on it, and I can't find the darn thing. As a result, blazes still spawn within it, and between them and the ghasts circling overhead, I can't seem to finish it.

After giving up on that task for now, I came back through the portal, and went into the wizarding workshop to drop off the empty potion bottles and blaze rods I'd accumulated during my efforts. I made sure the potions chest in there was fully stocked, then came out...to find a creeper waiting for me right outside the hidden piston door. Due to the momentary extreme lag I experience every time I use said door (probably due to all the redstone circuitry blocks updating constantly beneath me), I couldn't do anything about it, and the creeper exploded in my face. I barely survived...but the piston door did not. It's wrecked, there's a huge hole in the floor, and the circuitry is kaput. As the circuitry is more elaborate than the systems I am used to, I have left it for someone else to fix.

I hope you guys enjoy the dimly-lit and moody portal room. I consider it a deathtrap.

It's more like death from above... That's why I have been trying to do the roof...

I'll do my best to fix the system. It's relatively simple, but getting all the redstone timing right could be hard. I'll see how much actual damage was done

Re: So what did YOU do today?

Post  spectrumwars on Tue Feb 07, 2012 2:06 am

This afternoon I worked on the entrance tunnel a bit, testing out a few ideas for pillar and wallpaper designs. Then I sat in the skeleton XP grinder for a while, got my XP level up nice and high. I went into the portal room to see if the door to the wizarding workshop is fixed yet. I paused to grab some empty buckets from one of the working chests in there, intending to go down to the Nether later to drop off some arrows from the grinder and grab some lava for use in decorating the entrance tunnel. While I was looking in the chest and thus unable to move, a zombie came up and killed me stone dead.

After respawning in the warehouse and coming to retrieve my gear, I had a lower XP level than when I went into the grinder.

You want a TOP PRIORITY with a bunch of exclamation points after it? Make sure any room you are working on is lit up and sealed off from any areas monsters can spawn. Keeping areas well lit and safe from creepers and such is a far higher priority than making them pretty.

Very true, and something I forgot to put in the thread. Safety is another key issue. Sadly, I'm probably half to blame, considering I have spent most of the time trying to get the room done, and, despite multiple rapings From behind, haven't sealed it up fully.

To do with the thread, I honestly had no clue what to call it, and used caps and exclamation marks to Make sure it got attention...

Completed the nether room roof and walls.

Made a design for the tunnel to store room http://mcdwarves.forumotion.com/t130-entry-tunnel-pillar-wallpaper-concepts

I really like it.

Secured the blaze spawner so torches can be removed. I can create a grinder out of it if needed, although it'll be difficult. It takes a lot of room, and ghasts will make it hell, but it can be done, and it works great.

Forgot to add:
Completed another sheep pen (cause I wanted black wool, and, just my luck, the racist bastards didn't want black sheep). This includes grass and fences. There's 6 in there now

Extended the storage room, adding a hall for nether items, and a hall for potions and ingredients. I didn't fully extend them to include all necessary chests, might do that later.

Re: So what did YOU do today?

Post  spectrumwars on Wed Feb 08, 2012 9:21 am

Worked on the entrance hallway, mostly. The entire top T-section is now done. One side hall is rather close to the surface, and digging above the ceiling to have space for the lava strip kept breaking into the open, so I could only work on that during the day. Got blown up but not quite killed by a creeper once. Got caught in a lag-induced loop once and had to respawn on top of the mountain in the middle of a rainy night. Got almost inside before being killed by a spider within sight of the entrance. I should really start wearing armor again.

I made a couple of side trips to gather resources. Several trips to the nether for more lava resulted in only one stupid death. There was a zombie pigman wandering around in the lava mine, kept coming uncomfortably close to pushing me into the lava, so I carefully checked that he was the only one around, and then killed him. A couple minutes of gathering lava, filling the space in with dirt, and generally tidying up around the place later, I head upstairs again...when a second enraged zombie pigman drops down from above and kills me stone dead before I can really react. I also went into the desert to grab 3 stacks of sand when I ran low on glass. On my way back, I tidied up some leftovers from someone else's tree-chopping trip some time earlier.

There was one other stupid death of note. Arrow had come through the entrance and left a sign complaining about the noise of all those fires. I told him I heartily agreed with him, and took down the sign. I moved it to on the frame of the lava moat, across from the switch, and had it read "OTHER SIDE, STUPID" or somesuch, as a joke. Some time later, I found myself in need of a sign, to label which chest in our little temporary crafting and smelting area was the working chest, and which one was for stuff needing to go back to storage (empty lava buckets, mob drops, etc).

"Aha," I thought to myself. "I can use that sign Arrow left us! But how should I make sure that neither it, nor I, fall into the lava moat during its retrieval?" A dirt platform blocking the possible fall trajectories into the lava seemed a sensible precaution. So I build said dirt platform with no difficulties. But then it came time to climb up on top of the dirt platform, to catch the sign immediately after it breaks.

I hopped up to the platform....missed, bounced off the edge, and fell into the lava. I frantically tried to swim to the edge and climb out, to no avail. I died, screaming and on fire, flailing about uselessly about six inches from safe ground...and with a water bucket untouched in my hotbar. I always forget to use that thing, despite keeping it in my hotbar at all times for EXACTLY this sort of emergency.

My next incarnartion arrived to pick up my stuff, to find that some of it had been thrown clear to the other side of the lava moat. My clock, bow, arrows, and glass all survived the ordeal...but my diamond sword and more than half of my food did not. Ah well. No one seemed to be using that Knockback I enchanted diamond sword in the storage room, so I took that as a replacement, rather than using diamonds to make a new sword.

Re: So what did YOU do today?

Continued working on the entry hallway decorations. Completed the left side, working on the second leg of the right side. Below that is gonna be the next design pattern with the lava-visible-through-slabs walls.

Had to go back for more dirt to landscape the upper surface of the left side where it pokes above ground level. Took the opportunity to grab some redstone (about which see below) and make a quick side trip to the nether for a little more lava. The last time I had been in the nether, as I was about to leave, I'd seen a lone Zombie Pigman in the netherbase, and took the opportunity to try for a golden nugget for use in potions making or even gold bars. I didn't expect the pigmen to be still hostile from that incident...so I thought nothing of it when I went down to the lava mine to confront a dozen zombie pigmen milling around. They rushed me en masse and I tried to flee back up the stairs, but they were too fast, and I was cut down from behind. FIVE reincarnations later, I finally managed to finish the last of them off and gather up the stuff dropped by my previous five selves, and then finally I could bucket up some lava and return to the surface.

With my delivery of dirt, lava, and redstone to the entry crafting station complete, I was able to finish a side project. I installed a pair of Snow Golem gate guards just inside of the lava moat. Any hostile mobs who wander onto the far bank of the moat get pelted with snowballs until they are enraged enough to charge at the snowmen across the lava moat, which is invariably fatal for the monsters concerned. From now on, do not leave the piston pathway up when out working on the surface, or else a creeper might actually make it across to explode next to a snowman, with catastrophic results for the redstone wiring beneath the lava moat. Why did I need redstone for this? To slightly re-route the connection from the switch to the mechanism beneath, to go deeper inside the wall and behind the Snowlem station.

Speaking of creepers, later I made the mistake of poking my head out the back door to check on some noises out there and place an extra torch or two. A creeper dropped onto me from above and exploded, killing me. My next reincarnation arrived to find some of my gear washed away to oblivion by a new waterfall down into a dark cave and ravine system. People, if you're not gonna fill in empty spaces just behind the walls with cobble or dirt or something, at least leave a couple of torches in there to keep it lit up and monster-free. The same goes for the area around redstone circuitry: fill in as much as you can with cobble, or at least place enough torches around to keep it well lit. At least nothing expensive was lost in this incident.

And today I did:
Not much in the way of variety...

I began by showing a new player, lorpuis prime around the place. He now has the basic idea of the place, and if he has any questions, help him out Smile hopefully he'll not cause us problems.

Then we began on the work for the tunnel to the store room. With about 5 or 6 of us on, and all liking the design, we decided to make it then and there. It is darker, but still has enough light to keep mobs from spawning.

Slowly people left during construction, but eventually we got it built, finishing with just me and Jeff.

The Minecart tracks had to be altered slightly, so they didn't burn in the lava, but they should still work. Nice work everyone who helped out with that, it looks awesome Very Happy

Yep, that's my short day... Off to work now Wink

Nope. At some point, they fixed the bug that let light shine through slabs and steps to light up blocks. Now even sideways like that, slabs are completely opaque to light for purposes of calculating light levels on neighboring blocks. So all that lava isn't casting a single lumen of light into the corridor. Which is why Lorpy was disturbed to find a zombie and two skeletons in there this evening. I'm just glad no creepers spawned.

Tonight I helped guide Lorpy into the mountain from where he spawned out in the village. He's actually an old internet friend of mine. I also finished installing the pillars and lava lights and such in the upper entry hallways. Then Lorpy and I dug out the three remaining sheep pens. We now have all 16 pens completed, all 16 colors of sheep on hand, and all 16 colors of wool in stock. After that, I did some general tidying up chest-wise. I took all the unsorted junk in the to-be-sorted chest in storage and sorted it. I began moving materials from the temporary crafting area by the main entrance back to storage. I fixed the shortcut waterfalls I'd apparently accidentally broken during my cleanup from that creeper blast last night.

Tomorrow I'm thinking of widening the minecrart tunnel between storage and the farms, so the tracks can be moved a more comfortable distance away from the lava wall around the tunnels.

Re: So what did YOU do today?

Familiarized myself with the fortress. Set myself on fire and burned to death trying to help install the lava vents lighting up the tunnel to the storeroom. After discovering that they weren't actually providing enough light to prevent monsters spawning, experimented with a few methods to correct that problem. Ended up just punching three holes in the slab grilles in front of every vent, so that there's light and it looks kinda cool. Also had experimented with glowstones in the walls, and burning netherrack covered by glass in the floors (and torches and glowstone covered by glass, and bare glowstone). But ultimately nixed those to leave it just plain with the improved lava vents on the walls.

Glad to be part of the project.
